Strength in Diversity, Power in Unity: The Future of Florida and its Latino Community

Florida’s Latino community has long been a pillar of strength, resilience, and progress. From the vibrant streets of Miami to the historic cigar factories of Ybor City, Latinos have shaped the cultural, economic, and social heartbeat of the state. Yet in 2025, as we confront intensifying political division, economic inequality, and attacks on our rights, we must recognize a powerful truth: the future of Florida depends on the strength of its Latino community.
Our legacy is one of progress. From Spanish explorers and Cuban entrepreneurs to Puerto Rican professionals, we have helped build this state from the ground up. Today, Latinos are job creators, educators, healthcare workers, and public servants. We contribute billions to Florida’s economy, yet we remain underrepresented in decision-making spaces. We are often the first to feel the impact of budget cuts, immigration crackdowns, and voter suppression.
At the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Florida, we are working to change that. Our mission is not simply to react to injustice—it is to build lasting systems of empowerment that uplift every Latino in this state.
That means tackling the issues that impact our daily lives head-on.
In education, over 30% of students in Florida public schools are Latino. And yet, persistent disparities in resources and access remain. We advocate for bilingual education, equitable school funding, and community-based support systems that ensure our children don’t just survive, but thrive.
When it comes to civil rights and voting access, our community’s power at the ballot box cannot be overstated. But barriers remain—from gerrymandering to restrictive voting laws. LULAC Florida is mobilizing voters, training leaders, and holding institutions accountable to ensure Latino voices are not just heard but respected.
In the economy, Latinos form the backbone of Florida’s workforce. We are running businesses, filling essential jobs, and driving innovation. Yet wage disparities and limited access to capital still prevent many from reaching their full potential. We support fair
wages, small business investment, and workforce development programs designed with our community in mind.
Healthcare disparities, especially during and after the pandemic, have exposed systemic failures. Latinos continue to face barriers to healthcare that can literally mean the difference between life and death. We advocate for culturally competent healthcare, mental health resources, and expanded coverage options now—not later.
And yes, immigration remains a flashpoint. With a state rich in immigrant heritage, it is unconscionable that families are still being separated and hardworking individuals still live in fear. Florida must reject policies rooted in cruelty and embrace reforms that protect Dreamers, refugees, and immigrant workers.
What makes our community powerful is our diversity. We are Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Dominican, Colombian, Venezuelan, and more. Our rich cultures, languages, and traditions make Florida one of the most vibrant states in the nation. Rather than divide us, our differences bring us together. We share our stories, lift each other up, and celebrate the unique heritage that makes us who we are. LULAC Florida embraces this diversity, knowing that we form a mosaic of strength and possibility.
But it’s not enough to be proud of our culture—we must act on our collective potential. That starts with civic engagement. Register to vote and cast your ballot, in every election, including special and midterm elections. Support Latino-owned businesses, and mentor the next generation. Take leadership roles in your local councils, and volunteer in your community. Speaking out against policies that harm our people, and all people. And when policies won’t change unless politicians change, run for office or get involved with the campaign of a local leader that you support.
We have done it before. We can do it again.
Florida stands at a crossroads, and the choices made today will shape generations to come. At LULAC Florida, we’re not waiting for permission—we’re building power. But we can’t do it alone. We need every voice, every hand, every heart committed to justice and equity.
¡Adelante, Florida! The future is ours to shape.
